This is indeed a universal warning. I have received a letter from a reader who signed a promissory note that was not filled in properly. The guy signed for TL 1,000, but the other party simply added another one at the beginning of the number and made it 11,000. It sounds stupid.
Why should you sign a blank promissory note? It sounds very unlikely to happen to a sane person, isn’t it? However, a promissory note is the easiest instrument to issue as security. For a very simple transaction a foreign person may be required to put his/her signature on promissory notes in Turkish. Turkey was awarded in the United States for its efforts to create a smoke-free environment. The “Global Smoke Free Partnership” award was given to the Turkish National Committee on Smoking and Health which has been working for 20 years to create a smoke-free environment with participation of more than 40 state institutions and non-governmental organizations.
Professor Elif Dagli, chairperson of the committee, received the award at a ceremony at the Hilton Baltimore Hotel. Speaking at the award ceremony, American Cancer Society Chairman Thomas Glynn said that despite all pressure by giant cigarette industry, Turkey had applied the smoking ban in public places successfully. The first time we ever went to Bodrum was in the summer of 2002. We were in Fethiye on holiday (for the third time) and a Turkish friend who was on holiday in Bodrum asked us to go and meet them there. Loads of travel advice from our hotel staff and we were off. Our first ‘big’ travel adventure in Turkey actually but again, that’s another story. We were there for one night and to be honest, for us, it was the night from hell. If you like the sort of place where you get bars with very loud outdoor music and they’re all in a row so you can’t actually hear one bit of music OR have a conversation, then maybe you would have liked Bodrum at that time. (I don’t know if Bodrum is still like that.)
